Visting the Area
The first thing to note about planning a trip to the Southern Flinders Ranges is that we’re only 2.5 hours from Adelaide and one hour further north from the famous Clare Valley.
Our picturesque locations are home to an abundance of wildlife, where you can see our endangered yellow-footed rock wallaby in the picturesque gorges east of Port Pirie, along with an abundance of native fauna and flora. Spend time here and you’ll fascinate your
senses with dramatic scenery, into which you can immerse yourself further through bike riding, hiking, and fishing.
The ocean next to us is home to the famous Spencer Gulf red snapper. Anglers travel from around the country for the chance to catch the big one; a 12kg big red.
If you’re more of a 4WD enthusiast, we have some exciting tracks to test your skills. It is a great way to explore these magnificent, ancient ranges. Enjoy the local cellar doors and take the time to meet the families who own and operate their vineyards. They have established their own successful labels, they are a colourful bunch and all have a yarn to spin. Today the region is a bustling location throughout the four seasons and offers a spectacular landscape highly suitable to the tourist and traveller with many attractions for all to see.

Bridle Track
If four-wheel-driving is in your blood or you’re searching for a spectacular lookout, then this track and the routes running off it are an exciting alternative to the bitumen trails.
Starting around 10kms west of Melrose you will discover pristine valleys and gorges and take in the breathtaking views across the plains and Spencer Gulf. If you are prepared to wait, you will be rewarded with a magnificent sunset and those adventurous to do some night driving will experience the beautiful light display as each city in the Iron Triangle lights up the night sky.

Wirrabara
Wirrabara is home to one of the finest examples of silo art in regional South Australia. Stop off and grab a pie from the Old Bakery and head west to take it all in. If you’re lucky enough to be in town on the third Sunday of each month you can top up with regional supplies from the Wirrabara Producer’s Market. For the keen campers and bushwalkers among us, the former Wirrabara state forest is situated about 9km west of the Wirrabara township. You can now drive up to the top of the ranges to the newly installed Bluff Lookout. Your reward at the top – absolutely stunning views across the plains and gulf.
Camping is permitted at designated sites throughout the forest for a small fee charged by the forestry office. This location is easy and accessibly throughout most weather conditions and suits tent campers, caravans or camper trailers. There are many walking trails that can be tackled within the forest and two of these are accessible from the Ippinitchie camp ground. One is quite long and offers spectacular views to the west over Spencer Gulf. They are all pleasant walks, meandering through both pine and gum plantations.
Birdlife is prolific and it is quite common to hear the kookaburra laughing and the cockatoos screeching. You can see many kangaroos and wallabies takingshade during particularly hot days. Various reptile species, both lizard and snake, are common in the warmer months. It becomes very hot here
Melrose
The picturesque township of Melrose, located at the base of Mount Remarkable, is the oldest in the Flinders Ranges and is fast becoming the mountain biking mecca in South Australia. Development is currently underway to create an Epic Mountain Bike Trail around Mount Remarkable. Events throughout the year such as the Fat Tyre Festival, Melrose Strawberry Fete and the Easter Tennis Tournament are creating an all year festive vibe within the town. The newly restored Jacka Brothers Brewery runs events on a regular basis over the weekends. The traveller will be rewarded by the fascinating history and colourful past of Melrose and make sure you don’t miss a tour of the museum.

Gladstone
The old Gladstone Gaol that operated from 1879 to 1981 was originally intended for inebriates, debtors and other prisoners. Containing 120 cells, the gaol never exceeded a maximum of 60 prisoners during its history. The gaol is currently closed to visitors while future management directions are investigated.
Laura
The delightful town of Laura is nestled on the eastern slopes of the Southern Flinders Ranges on the banks of the southerly-flowing Rocky River amid stately redgums. It is a. beautiful location in which to set down for the day and enjoy a picnic beside the river. A fabulous time to visit is during the Laura Fair held in April each year. It offers craft and hobby stalls, food and drink, entertainment and much more.

Jamestown
Jamestown sits on the northern boundary of the Clare Valley and hosts an incredible air show once every three years. It is also home to the railway museum.
The town, birthplace of R.M. Williams, provides a good base from which to explore the Bundaleer Forest, the world’s first forest plantation in 1876 and now home to the stunning Maple & Pine venue, nature playground and beautiful walking trails to explore.
Wilmington
The Alligator Gorge, near Wilmington, is part of the Mount Remarkable National Park. This beautiful area is noted for displays of wildflowers in spring. There are steps into the gorge with resting bays at various points. Sometimes the gorge is so narrow that ferns and gum trees fight for light in this near-secret, pristine location.
Make sure you head up to Hancock’s Lookout —just a short drive out of town-to take in the northern end of the Spencer Gulf. Quietly breathtaking.
